The word summer is immediately associated with the sea: the beach, the water and the waves ... but also pollution. A problem often at the center of news and television news that unfortunately is attributed to different materials, among which we frequently (but not always, fortunately) find plastic, considered the main culprit of this unpleasant situation.
After the stop to use plastic in force in Italy since January 2021, a curious "maritime" experiment was carried out, the outcome of which we report today. Look at bioplastics (specifically PLA and PBAT), materials considered to be substitutes for traditional polymers (such as HDPE and PP), it has been found that even the latter degrade slowly in the environment. From the test conducted by the National Research Council, it emerges that after six months the virgin plastic granules (resin pellets) do not show a significant degradation in both polymers.
This means, first of all, that the measure wanted by the European Union to reduce the consumption of single-use plastic is not the most suitable way. If the materials that have to remedy the problems do not improve the situation, a path is needed, always starting from the assumption that the error lies at the source, that is, in those who disperse these materials.
On the other hand, and this is where we want to make our voices heard, the solution of plastic with similar or differently sustainable materials is not the effective solution to solve pollution.
Eliminating plastic would lead to a greater consumption of other materials, such as glass and paper: the former requires greater energy consumption for cleaning aimed at reuse; The second, looking specifically at disposable bags, would require the same paper to be used four times to achieve its energy balance.
Plastic is really more visible, we cannot hide it, but we believe that the main fault must always fall on those who are irresponsible and abandon it. So the question "Hate plastic: conscious choice or fashion?" Returns, to which we answered with a previous illustrative video.
